St. Ann & the Holy Trinity, Brooklyn Heights
St. Ann’s Church was incorporated as the Episcopal Church of Brooklyn in 1787. Upon erecting its first building in 1795, the parish re-incorporated as St. Ann’s Church. Holy Trinity held its first services in 1847; it was dissolved in controversy in 1957. St. Ann’s Church, in 1969, sold its property and moved into the empty Holy Trinity, taking its new name to honor that heritage. In 2018, the parish was once again designated a pro-cathedral of the diocese.
PROJECT DETAILS
During the 2020-21 academic year, I researched the history of the two parishes and their involvement with slavery and the slavery economy. Six juniors and seniors at Saint Ann’s School assisted me. Our report to the parish was made in the spring of 2021. A copy of the document is available here, and a video of the live presentation can be found below.
A new project, exploring the history of Holy Trinity’s relationship with W. E. B. Dubois and the nascent civil rights movement, has received vestry support, and a group of volunteers has begun this research.
